UK Smart Metering Sector Forms Post-Quantum Working Group to Coordinate Cryptographic Migration

Great Britain's Smart Energy Code Security Sub-Committee has established a Post Quantum Computing Working Group, which met for the first time on September 14, 2026, to coordinate cryptographic migration across the smart metering ecosystem: the Data Communications Company, the energy department, DCC users and meter manufacturers. No algorithms or deadlines were announced; the group's purpose is a consistent approach and shared guidance, including whether some back end interactions can move to quantum-safe methods before meters themselves change. Utility metering and telemetry in Canada carries the same long device lifetimes, so the sequencing question the UK is working through applies directly to water and energy operators here.

Why this matters for your infrastructure

Every advance in quantum computing shortens the window for migrating long lived infrastructure off quantum-vulnerable encryption, and data captured today can be decrypted later. Fabric Networks helps energy, government, telecom and community networks move to quantum-safe encryption on their own timeline, not an adversary's.
