Google Willow Grows Magic States at 99.99 Percent Fidelity, Removing a Resource Obstacle to Fault Tolerant Quantum Computing

Google Quantum AI reported in Science that its Willow processor cultivated magic states, the T states a fault tolerant quantum computer needs for useful computation, at about 99.99 percent fidelity, roughly a 40 fold error reduction, grown in a small colour code patch and moved into a distance 5 surface code. Distillation of these states was projected to consume 90 to 95 percent of a machine's qubits. It is a component level result on one chip, with about 8 percent of attempts kept, and not a cryptographically relevant computer; it does remove one of the larger resource obstacles on the path to one, which is the point for any operator holding data that must stay confidential past the early 2030s.

Why this matters for your infrastructure

Every advance in quantum computing shortens the window for migrating long lived infrastructure off quantum-vulnerable encryption, and data captured today can be decrypted later. Fabric Networks helps energy, government, telecom and community networks move to quantum-safe encryption on their own timeline, not an adversary's.
