NATO Quantum Technology Roadmap Puts Dates on Quantum-Resilient Communications and Industry Readiness

NATO's Quantum Technology Roadmap schedules an industry readiness study on quantum-resistant cryptography for Q2 2027, an updated action plan on the quantum threat to cryptography for Q3 2027, and a quantum-resilient communications pilot between Brussels and Mons by Q4 2027.

On September 29, 2026 NATO published its Quantum Technology Roadmap, which attaches timelines to the quantum strategy the Alliance adopted in 2023. Its Cryptographic Services Capability Team is responsible for the cryptographic elements.

On the security side, the roadmap schedules a NATO Industrial Advisory Group study on assessing industry readiness for quantum-resistant cryptographic solutions in Q2 2027, and the next update of the action plan for NATO's response to the quantum threat to cryptography in Q3 2027. The Quantum Zero Beacon Project, a pilot deployment between NATO headquarters in Brussels and SHAPE in Mons to validate a pathway to quantum-resilient communications, is due in Q4 2027. Adoption of post-quantum cryptography standards is listed as ongoing, and an Alliance quantum standards roadmap is due in Q3 2029. The roadmap also covers quantum sensing sea trials in 2026 and 2027, pilot evaluations and training.

Our take

NATO is about to ask industry how ready it is for quantum-resistant cryptography, and it has told everyone when. Canadian suppliers to defence and allied programs should expect that question in 2027, and the credible answer is evidence, not a statement of intent: what cryptography protects which links today, and the plan to change it. An inventory an auditor will accept answers both. Assess this fall, budget in 2027, secured by January 2028.
